Expertise and Labour

Yayasan Palung’s survey team taking a break (West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo)

A survey team consisting of Yayasan Palung staff and Village Forest Management Body members from the local communities resting after carrying out a biodiversity survey in two village forests. Engaging in village forestry is often an opportunity for villagers to gain new expertise, such as learning how to conduct biological surveys. Conversely, the successful implementation of village forestry heavily depends on the site-specific knowledge of local community members. In this case, for example, the team had to set up a ‘flying camp’ on top of a fallen tree trunk due to regular flooding of the forest floor.
