Making ‘enrichment’ for rehabilitant orangutans (West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo)

An animal keeper at International Animal Rescue (IAR) Indonesia’s rehabilitation centre uses bamboo to make ‘enrichment’, i.e. activities for rehabilitant orangutans to prevent boredom and improve their problem-solving skills. Other common forms of enrichment include peanuts hidden in banana stalks, jerrycans filled with sugarcane and leaves, or fruits in hessian sacks that have been sewn close. At IAR’s orangutan rehabilitation centre in West Kalimantan, enrichment is given to orangutans every day between meals.
