Carrying out an orangutan nest count in Aceh (Sumatra, Indonesia)
Orangutans build nests in trees for sleeping in. Traditionally, researchers estimated their population numbers by carrying out nest counts from the ground, using a number of variables to convert the raw data into population estimates. This picture features survey team member Asriadi Adi collecting data in a forest in Aceh (Indonesia) as he works his way along an orangutan nest line transect (a line stretched across a particular habitat or area along which data can be collected).
